Pangandaran: Recovering from the Tsunami PDF Print E-mail

A COMPASS workshop was conducted in Pangandaran on 23 December 2008 to identify significant gaps in building the tourism sector in this region, which well-known for its beautiful beaches. The workshop was attended by representatives from both, the public and private sectors. Compass is an instrument served to formulate goal for a development effort and identify gaps to reach this goal. In the Compass, Action Plans as well as monitoring and evaluation activities are embedded in the instrument.

The main finding of the workshop was a significant interest from stakeholders to join forces in developing the tourism sector in the area. However, despite a great number of attractive and unique locations, the main challenge lies in a lack of a strategy or “road map” for developing and promoting the local tourism industry.

The RED Program is planning to support the region by introducing selected tools, such as Value Chain Approach, Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) or CEFE trainings for entrepreneurs. Activities are set to start in 2009. Pangandaran is one of the “National Potential areas for tourism”, as stipulated in the Government Regulation No. 47/1997 on National Spatial Planning (RTRWN)

ImagePangandaran has been popular as a tourism destination for years, but when a tsunami shocked this small city in mid-2006 and killed more than 400 people, most of the businesses were forced to close. Many hotels, restaurants, stores and houses were damaged, and this had a devastating effect on the tourism sector as the main sector which the people of Pangandaran depended their lives and livelihoods on. Slowly but surely, with the support of the Provincial Government of West Java and the willingness of the local public and private sectors, Pangandaran has been able to recover and re-develop the region.

To this end, a management forum called RAMBAT MAPAG BALEBAT has already been established. The community of Pangandaran believes that they can develop their own region to become a world-class destination, in the faith that there is always a new hope in each sunrise – which is the actual meaning of MAPAG BALEBAT.
